The Choirs of St. Mary’s Church, Rostock
In 1948, KMD Dr. Hans-Joachim Wagner was appointed for the new
post as Organist and Choirmaster of St. Mary’s. Attracted by the large and then recently rebuilt organ and the beautiful church, which has survived the war, he immediately started a very effective work. Just one
year later, Handel’s “Messiah” was performed. In the following decades, the choir was continuously enlarged, and all major works of lutheran church music, espescially the cantatas, passions and oratorios by J. S.
Bach, have been performed.
In 1983, KMD Joachim Vetter succeeded Wagner. While carrying on
the work, he additionally founded a children’s choir and a smaller chamber choir. Retired choir members were invited to join a newly founded Seniors’ Choir.
In 2007, Karl-Bernhardin Kropf followed Vetter and took over the
choirs. Today, about 70 adults meet within the “Chor St. Marien”, which usually performs one large annual concert with orchestra and on several smaller occasions, of course including singing at services. Chamber
choir work has been restarted in 2008 with a women’s chamber choir, later eventually enlarged to a mixed chamber choir. Together with the top group of today’s three-stage children’s choir, this group of adult
singers make the Evensong Choir, which is bound to establish Choral Evensong in St. Mary’s, modelled after anglican tradition, in 2012. The Seniors’ Choir has become an important community for its members.
A small amateur brass ensemble, which is often found at German lutheran churches, was founded in 2007.
The music ministry is directed by Karl-Bernhardin Kropf (personal website>>). The master of the choristers is Jana-Christin Walter, soprano singer and music therapist.
